The instrument has ten wooden keys that work to make the music programmed on the wooden cylinder audible. The cylinder is programmed with brass pins and bridges, and is located on a wooden carriage which facilitates taking the cylinder in and out. The mechanism is activated by turning the handle at the back.
Accompanying textsOn the inside of the lid is a paper label, with the description "Noms Des Airs contenus au Présent Instrument", followed by the 8 melodies:
1. Entre Paris et Lyon
2. Le Chapeau de Margueul?
3. La Belle Heléne
4. Polka
5. La Petite chasse
6. air d'oiseau
7. air d'oiseau
8. Valse
The sound of this type of small, hand-turned organ is very high-pitched, like that of many small birds. Serinettes like these were used to teach small pet birds in cages to whistle melodies.
