DescriptionLandscape painting with dial in church clock. The dial conceals a square French pendulum movement with locking disc. The clockwork is equipped with striking mechanism with gong rod, which strikes at the hour strike. In addition, there are two so-called 'bimbam-spirals' to imitate the chiming of the clock. However, the intermediate mechanism to drive this is missing.
Accompanying textsIn the middle of the 19th century, a musical painting was a proper showpiece to impress and entertain your guests. It was not just an ornament on the wall, but it played music and even told the time. Sometimes a tower clock in the painting was replaced by a running watch with an angelus movement. This is a separate mechanism indicating the three daily catholic prayer times with the strike of a gong rod: six a.m., twelve a.m. and six p.m.
In the mid-19th century, a painting with music was a showpiece to impress and entertain your guests. It was not only an ornament on the wall, but it made music and one could even tell the time on it. This kind of painting may have originally been made with an angelus movement. This is a separate mechanism that indicates Catholic prayer times at three points during the day; at six in the morning, noon and six in the evening. It is very possible that the missing mechanism between the spirals in this object was an angelus work.
