Barrel organs were used by buskers to travel around and were mainly made in Germany and France, as well as the current Czech Republic. The Riemer brothers from Chrastava were suppliers of numerous small-sized and medium-sized barrel organs. The model of this organ is a little more complex. Besides its set of pipes, it also boasts a trumpet and piccolo register.
Since 1845, the Gebrüder Riemer (Brothers Riemer) built portable barrel organs, larger barrel organs and barrel pianos. They were based in what is now the Czech Republic, in a town that was economically successful due to its many textile workshops. Riemer's factory also contributed to the city's prosperity by exporting many organs. Brothers Robert, Julius and Heinrich were responsible for founding the company. They were succeeded by their children until the factory ceased to exist in 1909.
This particular portable barrel organ made by the Riemer firm features an image of a farm cart with a horse. This kind of scene or theme is quite unusual on such organs, which were usually decorated with flowers or small landscapes. Again, the inlay work consists of floral motifs.
