The music is programmed on a cylinder and the action can be wound with a spring. This necessaire or sewing kit is shaped like a miniature grand piano and is veneered with mahogany. The 'piano keys' are inlaid with ivory and ebony. The (incomplete) sewing set consists of nine pieces and is located under the mirrored piano lid, in a removable red velvet-covered tray. The cylinder action is located below this.
Accompanying textsOne melody is programmed on the cylinder.
A sewing set was an indispensable ladies' item in the 19th century and would have been present in virtually every household. However, the design differed markedly according to the social class of the household, from simpler to more expensive models. This sewing set was a more upmarket ladies' product and thus was even equipped with a musical movement.
