DescriptionThis handsome wooden cabinet has ornamented glass windows. Inside the case there is a cast-iron symmetrical piano frame, and behind it the soundboard. The 64 hammers make the instrument sound. They are driven by a large disc containing the music program, and star wheels, as can also be seen in a disc-playing music box. The entire instrument is powered by a heavy weight and operated by coin insertion.
Accompanying textsThe sound sources are 64 strings, 10 tubular bells, a small and large drum and cymbal. The music is diverse and, unusually for this type of instrument, is programmed on a metal disc.
Orchestrions that play with metal discs are quite rare. The metal disc is a program that was mainly used in music boxes. In Leipzig around 1900, the firm of Lochmann developed this instrument, in which the programmed disc plays a small piano. Because driving this instrument requires much more power than a music box, this Spiegel is driven by a large weight of no less than 120 pounds. The weight hangs from a steel cable behind the instrument and lowers down through a pulley. The weight must be wound back up from time to time using a crank. The instrument also bears the name of the retailer who sold this instrument manufactured by Lochmann: L. Spiegel & Sohn.
