Accompanying textsThis music box plays Polyphon records with a diameter of 62.5 cm. The large and varied repertoire includes Felix Mendelssohn's 'O for the wings of a dove', 'Banatos a szivem nag yon' by Sándor Komáromy, and an English folk song called 'Old folks at home'.
The company Polyphon in Leipzig was the largest manufacturer in the field of music boxes with interchangeable discs. You could get everything from small music boxes for the living room to large cabinets with discs more than half a metre in diameter. These were often placed in public places, where the public could operate them themselves. However, it is unlikely that many customers would actually change the discs themselves and so the owner of the establishment had to be responsible for this. Therefore, the music was probably often played on repeat. This problem could be solved by purchasing a more luxurious model with an automatic disc changer.
