Snuff powder was widely used across Europe by the 17th century. The use of this stimulant also generated the production of beautiful snuff boxes, which at their peak were combined with music boxes. Many examples of musical snuff boxes can be seen in our collections. Even the prototype of the very first music box (1796) by Antoine Favre-Solomon featured a so-called 'tabatière'. The earliest snuffboxes with musical movements date from around 1810.
