TitleCylinder Musical Box with Voix Céleste
Creator George Bendon
PlaceLondon (England)
Year ca. 1890
Object number0389
Object categorymechanical resounding reed instruments, music boxes
DescriptionThis very special and unusual music box does not use a playing comb at all, but a set of free reeds - the kind of sound source found in reed organs and harmonicas. In that sense, it is itself a kind of reed organ, but the shape and design of the object clearly conform to the recognisable genre of a cylinder music box. The reeds (metal strips) are fixed in a frame. On one side, the strips are free. When air flows against a strip, the strip bends, creating a space between it and the frame. The strip immediately springs back, interrupting the air flow. This creates a vibration and therefore a sound wave.
Accompanying textsThe tunesheet is well preserved and clearly lists the 12 melodies this music box can play. Among the repertoire are arias from Rossini's Guillame Tell, Gounod's Faust and Mozart's Don Giovanni; a waltz by Strauss, a mazurka by Gungl, the Spanish song 'la Jota Aragonesa' and the English hymn 'Nearer my God to thee'. The sound is somewhat similar to that of an accordion. This type of music box is also called a 'Full Organ Box'; it does not contain real organ pipes, but the sound is imitated.
The slightly mysterious air surrounding this unusual music box is enhanced by the fact that not much is known about its maker, George Bendon. That he is actually the maker is assumed on the basis of the tunesheet which, according to concordant literature, is from Bendon.
