DescriptionThis music box contains six playing combs with 50 teeth each. The mechanism is powered by one central spring drive, with two winding points on the right side, and can be triggered by coin insertion. This 'Eroica' model can play three complementary and vertically mounted discs simultaneously. The comb arrangement, called "sublime harmony", consists of playing several similar, but not identical, combs.
Accompanying textsThe system of sublime harmony is somewhat similar to the multi-comb fortepiano system, also designed to create depth, variation and richness in the volume, texture, and quality of the sound. It is also possible to give the plates different programmes to add more expression to the music. The prerequisite is that the instrument must be perfectly tuned to play all three records simultaneously.
Together with Polyphon Musikwerke and Regina, Symphonion was one of the three biggest manufacturers of disc-playing music boxes. The 'Eroica' model was put into production by Symphonion from 1897.
