DescriptionThis late-eighteenth-century table organ clock by renowned maker Pierre Jaquet Droz uses real tortoiseshell - a then-popular but environmentally damaging material - to apply patterns to the rich red case.
Accompanying textsThe organ has 13 keys and one stop and can play eight melodies, including a Prelude, an Allegro and a March. The inclusion of a sharp G in the instrument's scale is perhaps noteworthy, as this note is only used in one of the pieces the organ can play (a Prelude in A minor).
In 1738, Pierre Jaquet-Droz started making clocks in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1758, he made a trip to Spain and managed to sell six clocks to King Ferdinand VI. This gave a huge boost to his business. With his son Henry-Louis and employee Jean-Frédéric Leschot, he worked on exclusive watches, automatons and (musical) clocks, which were sold all over the world. Pierre Jaquet-Droz died in 1790 and his son passed away only a year later.
