DescriptionThe case of this longcase clock, as is usual for this type of clocks, is made of oak veneered with burr walnut. The interior shows great similarity to that of the Allin Walker table clock (cat. no. 0203), but differs in two important ways: the driving force is not provided by springs but by weights, and the cylinder can be changed.
The most common indications on the dials of Amsterdam musical clocks are: seconds, minutes, hours, date, the day of the week with image and symbol, the time of high water in the harbor, and of course the selection program of the various melodies (sometimes as many as 24 per cylinder!).
In the 18th century these clocks were status symbols, reserved only for the elite. Not surprisingly, therefore, such clocks were richly decorated. Symbolic elements were often used for this purpose. The bronze figures crowning the clock are, from left to right, the gods Mercury (trade), Chronos (father time) and the goddess Athene (wisdom). The tide in the Amsterdam harbor is also represented here, essential knowledge for those in trade.
