Polyphon Musikwerke produced several types of musical clocks with disc-playing musical movements in the late 19th century. They usually ordered the cabinets for these clocks from a clockmaker (usually from Aktiengesellschaft für Uhrenfabrikation Lenzkirch, Germany) and then mounted their own playing mechanism (with discs) inside. The manufacturer Symphonion (a competitor of Polyphon) also ordered their cabinets from Lenzkirch. As a result, the clocks by these two manufacturers are often very similar.
Clocks with a disc mechanism were often found in hotels and other public places. For these public contexts, Polyphon clocks were equipped with a coin-operated mechanism to activate the instrument. This allowed music to be listened to at any time, in addition to the free "concert" which played on the hour.
