Born in Amsterdam in 1780, Hendrik Olland later settled in Groningen as a watchmaker. In his spare time he manufactured this mechanical artwork, in which he tried to imitate natural movements with a mechanism. In 1840, an advertisement appeared in the Groninger Courant, extensively describing and praising the piece. According to the advertisement, "in the composition of this piece of art, Mr. Olland had made himself known not only as a highly skilled mechanic, but also as a perceptive observer and faithful follower of what surrounds him in nature."
The painting is signed: "Hend'k Olland Fecit Groningen 1826".
