DescriptionBy blowing into the 'trumpet' and turning the lever next to the mouthpiece at the same time, the instrument starts to play. It has 18 keys. It works on the same basis as a hand-turned reed organ, but is shaped like a trumpet.
Accompanying textsThe Trombino plays from a paper roll, which at the time could be purchased for as little as 30-35 cents. A 1903 advertisement listed the following available repertoire: 'the most beautiful songs, dances, marches, such as: ‘Trompetter van Saeckingen’, ‘Stille Nacht’, ‘Heidebloempje’, ‘Heelemaal Alleen’, ‘Santa Lucia’, ‘Zie de leliën op het veld’, ‘Wien Neerlandsch bloed’, ‘Bijenhuis Marsch’, ‘Hip, hip, hoerah’, ‘Weet gij, moeder’, ‘hebt gij niet den kleinen Cohn gezien’, and about 200 other pieces of music'!
In the same 1903 advert, consumers were encouraged to take advantage of both the element of surprise and the portability of the Trombino, which could be purchased for 6 guilders 50:
'The Trombino creates great excitement everywhere, especially when someone, in company on one occasion, performs like a virtuoso, while it was not known to anyone beforehand, that they played this instrument. The Trombino is the greatest entertainment at home, for parties, celebrations, outings, foot and bicycle rides, driving tours and rowing parties.'
