DescriptionLike many historical trinkets, this one contains a surprise in its design. The tiny automaton pair depicted inside the breloque are having an intimate (mechanical) moment. The silver figure below is bolted to the blue back wall. The figure above consists of three parts hinged together and attached to the lower figure. On the back of the upper figure is a shaft, which passes through a hole in the blued plate, on the back of which rests a spring. This spring ensures that when the axle passes over the motion programme disk of the music mechanism, it also returns to its former position, so that the upper figure moves up and down. The programme disc is also thoughtfully designed so that this movement is not "robotically" regular, but changes speed in a more "natural" way.
Accompanying textsThe breloque plays one melody: a gigue.
Although this particular object is a breloque rather than a watch, pocket watches with erotic scenes were a very popular genre. Erotic watches were manufactured in Paris and London, but especially in the Swiss Jura. Production there took on huge proportions after 1800 because of the high demand for such gadgets. After World War I, however, the modern wristwatch became increasingly popular. Thus ended the centuries-long heyday of the pocket watch, and by extension also the production of the "montre mechanté" ('naughty watch').
