DescriptionIn the clock base is an early Swiss cylinder movement. There is a connection between the clockwork and the playing movement, so the music is activated by the clockwork once an hour.
Accompanying textsThe playing comb is of the segment comb type: the teeth (90 in total) are mounted in segments of 2. Four dance numbers are programmed on the cylinder: a minuet, a quadrille and two waltzes.
This table clock is covered with symbols referring to time. The figure on the left is the goddess of dawn (Eos or Aurora), lifting the starry cloak of night. Below that are further images of Eos in her chariot, chasing away the night. The rooster on the right and the sun rays under Eos' cloak represent dawn, the signs of the zodiac represent the passing of a year, and wrapped around the base of the column is a snake biting its own tail, representing eternity. The plaque on the front of the clock reads "Madame Marguerite."
