DescriptionThe clock has a striking mechanism that strikes two bells at full and half hours. The dial displays an indication of seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and which tune is selected. The front and base of the walnut-veneered oak case are inlaid with delicate marquetry of flowers and musical instruments.
Accompanying textsThe clock has 10 bells with 19 hammers and can play 12 tunes:
‘Schouburg’, of ‘De savoyaardse meisjes’;
Aria (‘Que vous trompettez’);
‘Wilhelmus’ (folk song);
‘Mars van Dessau’;
‘Medousen’ or ‘Mars van Boufflers’;
a contre-danse;
a gigue;
‘De Vrientschap’ or ‘Hoe zoet is het daar de vriendschap woont’;
‘Folie d’Espagne’;
‘Rigaudon’;
‘De klapperman’;
‘Nuijalokke’ or ‘Jalousie’
In the late 18th century, the architectural style of longcase clocks changed somewhat. On this clock, for example, the dial sits slightly higher than on earlier specimens, and a painting (here of people walking past a fountain in a green, tree-lined park) appears below the dial. The details in design are both typically Dutch, and reflect changing stylistic choices of the era. The three gilded wooden statues crowning the clock - Atlas carrying the world on his shoulders, and two trumpet blowing angels on either side of him - are common figures for Dutch clock ornaments.
