This type of Black Forest longcase organ clock is called a Flötenuhr. This specimen was later repainted in the Hindeloopen style. In 1849, Eduard Hauser (clockmaker) and Ignaz Schöpperle (mechanical organ builder) established a small workshop in Lenzkirch for machining and finishing clock parts that would then be sent to clockmakers for a final fit. In the past, clockmakers had to make each part by hand, put everything together and hope that everything would work properly. Hausers and Schöpperle's goal was to produce timepieces using the new "Serial Assembly" technique, in which compact, machined and fully assembled timepieces would be shipped to clockmakers, ready for installation.
