DescriptionThe watch indicates approximate time on demand. Pressing the pendant creates tension on the spring; when released, the whole hours sound with a single strike on gong bars and then the number of quarters with double strikes. Music can also be played on demand and on the whole hour. Playback is activated by pressing a small gold button close to the numeral 4.
Accompanying textsThe playing comb has 35 teeth, attached in smaller segments of four and three teeth.
A gilt guard over the playing comb is engraved with a notated melody in 3/8 time, titled "Valse". However, the music as the watch now plays it does not seem to correspond exactly to this notation.
The maker and date of this watch are not known, but it is believed to have been made around 1815 in Geneva, which was perhaps the most important center for watchmaking in the 19th century.
