In the 19th century, a small, elaborate sewing accessory with a musical movement was a luxurious, popular item for wealthy ladies. It is not known where this specimen was manufactured, but the playwork was made in Geneva. In any case, the box itself was adapted in the Netherlands. On the lid behind glass is a watercolor with a view of Pig Island (Varkens-Weert) outside Maastricht.
