Tortoiseshell has been used as an ornamental material since at least Roman times. In the 18th century, during the time of European colonialism and exploitation, trade in tortoiseshell flourished. It was a popular finish for furniture and clocks. The trade was banned in the 20th century, but the damage to populations of species such as the hawksbill turtle has been extensive and to some extent even irreversible. The tortoiseshell pattern is still popular in jewellery and eyewear, but is now produced synthetically.
