DescriptionAccompanying this book organ is an instruction booklet, which can be considered a kind of manual. This booklet explains that hand-turned instruments like this one were often criticised for being too delicate to transport over long distances and for being almost impossible to repair. We are assured that this is not the case with the Coelophone. The booklet explains the basic operation - how turning the lever activates the bellows, which send air into the wind chamber, which in turn is "pierced with a certain number of holes". Where the paper music carrier has no holes, no air goes from the wind chamber to the reeds - but where it does, the corresponding note sounds. After describing the mechanism (which the author says is "perfectly simple"), the reader is told that simple routine repairs and maintenance can easily be carried out. One is to ("carefully") thread a knitting needle through a hole in the side of the instrument to remove accumulated dust.
Accompanying textsThe Coelophone played a variety of tunes whose titles are listed in the accompanying 'manual'. These include songs by Emil Waldteufel, Gaetano Donizetti, Jaques Offenbach, Richard Wagner, Louis Ganne, Gioachino Rossini, Georges Bizet, Hector Berlioz, Giuseppe Verdi, Charles Gounod, Pietro Mascagni and many other popular names of the time. The available booklets are grouped into several categories: mazurkas; Scottish melodies; galops; quadrilles; marches; overtures; national hymns and songs; opera melodies (by far the largest group); religious melodies; 'miscellaneous'; English melodies; Russian melodies; and Spanish melodies.
The musical instrument firm Thibouville-Lamy originated in 1730, had great success in the 19th century, and still exists in the form of J. Thibouville-Lamy, makers of bows for stringed instruments.
