Description'Binaural' by artist Bart Schalekamp (1995) is a mechanical sound experience that creates two tones acoustically. Together they generate a 'beat' inspired by the phenomenon of Binaural Beats. This phenomenon is created by two constant tones with a small difference in frequency. These tones interfere with each other, creating a wavy sound called "beating." Experiments with the acoustic creation of fixed frequency tones have made an unconventional way of working with glass possible.
Accompanying texts'Binaural' is a collaboration with the Klinkklare Foundation, a partnership between STEIM, Het Muziekgebouw Aan 't IJ, Beeldenstorm, Sundaymorning@ekwc and The National Glass Museum. Together they have set up a project on research into new sound technologies, acoustic experiences and buildings as musical objects. Binaural' is one of the first results of this ten-year project.
