Royal
Discover a majestic world full of gold and glamour. The shiny playing bells and music boxes were used by the most powerful to emphasize their status and power.
Living Room
These self-playing instruments were at first only found in wealthy homes. They are all very expensive and that meant that only rich people could buy these musical instruments and bring mechanical music into their homes.
Street
Everyone knows the large, colorful instruments that play in the street. The street organ provided cheerful music, while the organ man stood shaking a penny box. In some cities you still see and hear them.
Amusement
Entertainment has traditionally been found at the fair. In the past, fairground attractions were often musically accompanied by barrel organs. Organs were also very popular in entertainment venues such as the dance hall. For a fee, the public could request a waltz, foxtrot or tango.
Highlights
All our instruments are worth seeing and hearing, but some deserve to be highlighted because of their special appearance or surprising story.
Depot
It is impossible to display all our collection items, but we prefer not to withhold them from our audience. That is why we would also like to show a selection from the depot online.
Repertoire
Self-playing instruments are, of course, all about the music. Today we hear what the historic owners also heard. The repertoire of our instruments varies from old anonymous dances to opera and contemporary hits.
Sound Installations
Contemporary artists continue to reflect on the legacy of mechanical music and create refreshing and unexpected new instruments and sound installations. These evocative sound installations have been temporarily added to our presentation.
