DescriptionOn the wooden stick is a sphere made of papier maché. On top of this sphere is a bisque porcelain head with blue glass eyes. The papier maché sphere is covered with a white cotton sleeve under a silk dress with floral print. These points are finished with a gold-colored metal trim. The collar consists of the same sort of cream-colored lace that is also found on the hat. The doll has a blonde mohair wig and a silk hat.
Accompanying textsThe playing comb has 21 teeth and the cylinder contains one, unknown melody.
A marotte is typically a puppet head mounted on a stick. Marottes were used by entertainers in the Middle Ages, but this example comes from much later and was a children's toy.
This particular marotte was given to its previous owner at the fairgrounds at the age of five. Fortunately, she took good care of the marotte, hardly played with it and kept it in a box. Thus, the marotte is still in perfect condition.
